Fly Fishing

Having been in the fly fishing industry for nearly 10 years in the Rocky Mountain of British Columbia, fly fishing for Tarpon in Costa Rica on a jungle river was to be something else. Once my partner Mauricio, a local Costa Rican, talked about these big fish up in northern Costa Rica, we decided we had to travel to Cano Negro to see for ourselves. We then packed up several Hobie kayaks and went up to Cano Negro to locate these tarpons.

It did not take long, from our kayaks we started to hear and see these beautiful silver tarpon surfacing for air and food, rolling over at the surface like some kind of extra large trout. At times we were fly fishing for them from shore and had to shake our heads to see where we really were.

Cano Negro is a national wildlife refuge right in the center of Costa Rica and below Lake Nicaragua. CaƱo Negro is off the beaten path, but worth the effort. The river is surrounded by canyons of towering green jungle making it a unique place to find such beautiful tarpons armed with your fly fishing rod. There is also a large population of snook and rainbow bass waiting for the skilled fly fishing angler.

The best part of fly fishing for tarpon in Cano Negro, Costa Rica, is that not many people have chased tarpon with a fly rod. It is relatively easy as these fish have not seen many tarpon flies. Just a good presentation can get you many tarpons on this amazing river. You can really feel the take and setting the hook has not been a problem in the river.

Enough said, come and enjoy a 3 day package on the beautiful Rio Frio. Fishing licence will cost you 30 US dollars plus a 10 US dollars fee to get into the park. Accomodation is included.

Packages start at 3 days but can be extended to longer period. We believe a minimum of 3 days is sure to get you at least many tarpons. Tight on time we can do an overnight and a day or a 2 day package.

A 3 day package based on 2 anglers is US $1990.00. This package is all inclusive with return transportation from your hotel or airport, all accommodation in Cano Negro, all food and non alcoholic drinks, boats and captain plus guide, tarpon flies and equipment.

What to bring? Sun screen, hat sunglasses, rain jacket, 10 to 12 wt. rod, 60 to 90lbs binimi twist leader, camera, chartreuse crazy Charlie, traditional tarpon flies in red, black, orange and chartreuse.
